Frequently asked questions
What is the meme coin fear and greed index?
A live 0-100 score that measures how bullish or bearish the meme coin market is right now. A higher score means greed (people piling in), a lower score means fear (people stepping back). The score updates roughly every hour.
How is the score calculated?
We combine 9 signals: meme price momentum across the top 250 meme coins, total trading volume, pump.fun volume, pump.fun protocol fees, how many memes appear in the top 100 global 24h gainers, SOL/ETH/BNB host chain momentum, memes vs Bitcoin performance, top 100 blue-chip meme momentum, and market volatility. Each signal scores 0-100 and the final index is a weighted average.
How is this different from the regular crypto fear and greed index?
The standard crypto fear and greed index (like alternative.me) measures the whole crypto market and is heavily dominated by Bitcoin. Meme coins frequently move very differently from Bitcoin. This index focuses on meme coins specifically and adds pump.fun activity, which is a uniquely meme-native signal.
What does each score level mean?
0-24 is Extreme Fear, 25-44 is Fear, 45-54 is Neutral, 55-74 is Greed, and 75-100 is Extreme Greed. Extreme readings on either side often suggest the market is overstretched and ready for a reversal.
How often does the score update?
The score recalculates roughly every hour using fresh price and volume data from CoinGecko and on-chain activity from Defillama. The chart on this page shows the score over the last 7 days at hourly resolution.
Should I trade based on this score?
No. This index is built for fun and to give a quick snapshot of market mood. Crypto markets can stay fearful or greedy for long stretches, and many other factors drive price action. This is not financial advice. Always do your own research.
Where does the data come from?
Price, volume, and momentum data come from CoinGecko (using their meme-token category and top-250 coin markets endpoints). Pump.fun protocol fees and AMM trading volume come from Defillama. All sources are public and free to use.
